Thank you Dennis and Brian, for your input regarding embedded formatting codes. Yes, I do have "Keep embedded formatting codes within text" checked but had no idea that they would appear as actual text in the GEDCOM file. I thought that by keeping them, they would perform their purpose but stay invisible.
However when faced with a choice of visible formatting codes or staggered columns, I'll choose the latter and let Rootsweb worry about appearances. Many thanks for your help.
