As mentioned, the problem with doing as you say is that if you have other 
events for which the source is NOT a source, those events will now have that 
source.

There is no "little hack".  The directions are quite clear - use the
"-" for a single source to the item where the cursor is located -- use
the triple "-" to source everything on the page that has data.  It
makes it so easy if you find a family with a bunch of kids on a
census.  AS you enter the information on them - just hit the triple
"-" and they are all sourced.  Quick and easy!

I use it quite a bit!
