It has been that way as long as I can remember and it has always been
explained in the help files.

It may have resulted in terrible results but it was doing what you told
it to do.

Not really. Using the source functions properly will save lots of time.
  There good directions and explanations in the help files.

A very good reason to read the help file regarding a function of the
program BEFORE using that function on your real files.  That is a
caution that applies to every single piece of software in existence.
