Thanks for that clarification, that's made it a lot clearer. It's the
loose use of jargon that confuses me.
I'm a bit out of touch with database terminology so I don't know what a
collection of fields within a record ought to be called.
If I've understood correctly I would have the 3bar message say 'adds
clipboard source against all entered information'
and the solid bar say 'adds clipboard source to the unspecified event'.
Note 'the' not 'a' because as far as I can see there can only be one
unspecified event.
However repeating the process (with different source clipboard data)
adds a blank event rather than overwriting the 'unspecified event'.
Also the 3bar option adds a blank event to the source list if a
different source event already exists for the information so several
blanks source events can be created against existing information.

I've come to the same conclusion as Jenny Benson. Create a fictitious
set of records and play around with them, try simulating some of the
problems discussed here etc.
I've played around with the buttons on my test people and can see what
is going on now and how to undo it for individual records
But equally I think software designers should design with the (lay) user
in mind and written guides be clear, consistent in their terminology and
unambiguous.
