Depends how and where they are used, I think.

I use Chapman Codes in  my Short Locations but the Short Locs are really
only for my benefit.  If I'm compiling a Report for "outside
consumption" I would use the Long Locations (which include full address,
counties, etc and no abbreviations except USA because typing United
States of America every time would be a PITA and I think *everyone*
understands USA!)

As for removing the Codes, or any part of a Location, Short or
otherwise, you can use Search & Replace.
