I think these days here in Oz (and has done for some years now), the meaning
of the word tends more to annoying or aggravating rather than anything else.

Just read my comment, sent early morning! It is not a shortened version
of something else, but a noun. In the UK, as used in your context, it
is not referring to a piece of turf <grin>.

Just shows the care needed when using colloquialisms!
