Pauline, The problem with discussions such as this is that the solution lies in having and learning to use a decent word processor. Legacy is not, and in my view should not be, one; it provides basic text in a format which can be used by word processors to produce a finished document.
I am not interested in producing a book from my researches, at least not one which would depend heavily on Legacy's reporting facilities, but I do produce fairly regularly reports, often non-standard, which often use the output from two or more reports which I merge in OpenOffice.org. The OO.o contents and indexing functions do allow one to do this without destroying the integrity of their purpose, and will accomodate multiple changes and give the correct new page numbers. It is my belief that WORD has problems in doing this, but I have never used the program, so I cannot be sure. As someone else has suggested, I think I would have to change PDF to text in order to enter this into the publication. I have said many times before, that those of us who are interested in producing websites, rather than written publications are used to having to use other software to provide an acceptable product, even if we do use the basic, buggy, Legacy output. I see this as being no different to users having to learn how to use word processors for written publications, and would suggest that it is a topic more suitable for their user groups.
