Hello Robert My previous program was "Ultimate Family Tree" and there was a workaround to find the missing RIN numbers. As far as I know there is not in Legacy.
My filing system is based on RIN numbers. When I refer to a RIN number for any reason I prefix it with "TW" to differentiate from other numbers like year, my notebook page number etc. My Source Detail starts with say "File TW6892" so I go straight to the filing system to find the hard copy. It can be placed in [[....]] if you don't want it shown in reports. When I merge two records say RIN239 and RIN 456 one of the RINs is no longer used say RIN239. Then I add a new record say RIN12347 - Given Name - "Now RIN456 Bill", Surname - "Smith" Then I renumber RIN12347 to RIN239. So in the "Name List" for RIN 239 the entry appears as "Now RIN456 Bill Smith" So I know where to find the hard copy. RIN12347 disappears. If I want to search for all the renamed RIN numbers I just type in the "Given Name Field" - "Now" and I get an immediate list of them. This means I have no gaps in the RIN numbering, but I can find where the hard copy for the source for a deleted item is filed. If there are any gaps for other reasons I don't bother to fill them in. In "Options" - "Customise" - "Data Defaults" - "When adding New Records"- "Reuse abandoned RINs" is not ticked. It was not until I had been using Legacy for some time that I found a reference on the hard copy to a RIN which was no longer there, so instituted this system. I know I could have used a Source ID system to file my hard copy, but I didn't at the time, so this current system works well for me and is only used rarely.
