I have been watching this thread and it seems to me a lot of people are getting a bit of a hangup about Rin's, as far as it concerns me the Rin is for the particular program that I may be using to get it's act together. For the last 30 years I have used my own User Id, currently using Legacy but in the past just about every Genealogical program going since the old Commodore 64, I have numerous spreadsheets, census returns and other databases all using my Reference, so the Rin has no bearing except for the program. My particular system is very simple, every Id starts with a letter ie Woolvett is in the W, Rose is in R, these are all numbered from 1, so I am w51, this numbering system doesn't get overloaded, I'm doing a One-Name study of the Woolvett surname and the W's are only up to w1256. All my spreadsheets are interlinked via the User Id. I interact with a lot of family members globally and when referring to a particular ancestor have no trouble in making sure we are talking about the right person.
