Ron,

Changing married settings method does not give me the results desired either
.... this gives me "Mary married [underlined space for date] in [underlined
space for location" but no underlined space for name.

Lincoln,

Following my last post, my attention has been drawn to the Marriage Settings
at OptionsCustomise>View>Edit Default Marriage Wording. If you change the
wording for an unknown spouse to read "married" I think you will find it
will resolve your problem. I had forgotten about that setting - and it's not
where I would expect to find it either!
