Brian, I don't know the history of the need for the password. I do remember something about the problem we had with receiving too many invalid email addresses which caused big problems with trying to alert our Legacy users to new updates, etc. So I think the need for a valid email address was partially solved by requesting the user's email address to which we would send the password. Some people would type in an incorrect password, or our email to them would go in their spam folders, so to make it a little easier, we published the password on the web page. No, there's not much secret about it. And no, we do not sell anyone's email address either, but our privacy policy should be better advertised on our site.

But now, I'm back to the original question about why a password is needed to install Legacy especially given the fact that the password is freely published on the web. It's not used to collect email addresses even for Millennia's own use. I think maybe it's an Arizona thing. And by the way... for anybody that might be thinking otherwise, this is not even near being a complaint about the use of the password. I'm just looking for some info about its origins and/or purpose.
