For what it's worth, and not worth file notes, I load each photograph
into Photoshop, use the "Canvas Size" command to add a white strip along
the bottom then using the Text command, type in names left to right, or
a full name including married names with birth and death years. That
way, a photograph is always identified, no matter where it goes.

I also deliberately scan at around 1000-1200 dpi in case anyone wants a
hard copy later on, in which case it will be of hopefully photographic
quality. And if there are any glaring scratches or tears, I touch them
up too.

A large resolution scan is also handy too for noting special details,
like fall maple leaf lapel decorations in a family christening picture,
or a masking tape X across a distant window, taken during WWII.
