One example of the name of a person changing for the same person or descendants over the years is Adelbert became Delbert in a later generation and Adelbert was called (nicknamed) Bert and Delbert was called (nicknamed) Del. These changes have shown up in a number of families. Having the all versions of names in the "Alternate Names" field helps identify some families when using the Name Index.
Census records often have different spellings of given and surnames from one census to the next. Entering all of them in the "Alternate Names" field allows me to easily swap the alternate name for the "main" name when I decide which one was correct or used the most often. We have heard a number of times that the spelling of names in the U.S. was not important until WWI.
