Connie: Amen to that! I have a man in my database whose given name was actually Mno. (What were his parents thinking?!) I'm familiar with LNU for "last name unknown" and NMI for "no middle initial" and thought Mno was an error until I found it in a bio on the family, a census listing, and his draft card. Those abbreviations should definitely be avoided.

It has never caused me any problems to do it this way, although I'm sure some will find it doesn't suit their needs. It may, for example, cause problems on web pages. It beats LNU or similar abbreviations or words that can subsequently be misinterpreted as someone's actual name.
