Yes, captions give you the ability to add descriptions or captions to your photos. Most, if not all ‘photo programs’ give you this ability. They also usually allow you to add keywords, and some have ‘facial recognition’ to allow you to identify and then search on people’s faces. All great information in addition to the photo file name.
The problem that arises is that standards of where to store this description information are evolving. IPTC caption is just one field that can be used, the EXIF Description is another one. Because of this, programs often store the caption in multiple places. According to Anne, Adobe stores the caption in both the ‘IPTC field’ and the ‘EXIF field’. It may also store it in other fields (XMP) as well. I use Windows Photo Gallery, and it does use the ‘EXIF’ field but does not use the ‘IPTC field’. Confused yet? There are many great photo programs, some free, some that cost money, that will do a good job of managing and organizing your photos, including captions. With respect to Legacy, if the photo program supports writing captions to the “EXIF Description” field, Legacy will give you the option to import that text into the Picture Gallery description field when you add the photo to an individual, event, or source. That is a nice feature, but I’m not sure it would be the prime reason I would choose one photo program over another. This all sounds very interesting but I'm kind of lost. Does this give you an ability to give more descriptive information about your images? Thanks for filling me in; I'm not familiar with a lot of this technical jargon. Kathy On Sun, Sep 5, 2010 at 12:05 PM, Anne Mamiya <[email protected]> wrote: Thank you, Paul. You are correct that IrfanView does not write EXIF information. I opened my file in Adobe Elements and then saved it. Apparently it must save the IPTC caption information in the EXIF Description field as well. Now when I add the picture into Legacy, I get the notification about the picture containing embedded comments and would I like to import them into the description field. Thanks so much for your assistance! It uses the EXIF field 'Description'. I believe that IfranView allows you to view, but not update EXIF tags. The only application that I know (although I am sure others exist) that lets you edit the EXIF tags is EXIFTool (best when paired with EXIFGUI for a readable interface). I'm not sure whether others like Adobe Photoshop, Picasa etc. support this. However, from my limited knowledge in this area, it appears there is an increasing trend towards using "XMP tags" at least for photo identification. There are others who will probably chime in with more specific recommendations. I have been reading the archives and several posts mention that the IPTC Caption field will automatically import into the Description field when attaching a photo to an individual. I am not finding that the case. Is there an option somewhere within Legacy that must be set for this to happen? I have looked and cannot find one. Thanks in advance for your help.
