Thanks Kirsten, your answer seems clear to me... Yes, I wasn't clear! I should not have confused the question by commenting that the relationship between individuals cannot be directly sourced -to demonstrate such relationships, the sourcing is attached to an event such as a birth or a christening. I'll be more careful in the way I pose questions in future.
It isn't the sourcing that is my question, it's where to put a transcription of the source material within the Legacy Database. If I have missed the point about the source clipboard, please tell me. It seems that I am doing what everbody else does with transcriptions of monumental inscriptions -file the transcription in the source detail text/comment. I ask that question because it seems untidy to me that the same transcription appears for instance under the dates of birth and death of father, mother, half a dozen infants, a married daughter and her husband... It would be neater if the transcription appeared in the database in just one place and the ssource detail ponted not only to the source that was accessed but also the transcription/abstract. True, I could mention only the relevant parts of the monumental inscription in each of the source detail text/comment. Is that what most people do? The issue of multiple appearances of a larger amount of transcription is more pressing for wills. I find that a substantial part of the document needs to be taken into consideration for the event to be adequately supported. That is why I have put the transcription in only one place in my Legacy database - testator's event/fact- and reference this location within the source detail text/comment. I do not seem to be following usualm practice for wills. testator's event/fact From: Kirsten Bowman <vik...@rvi.net> To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Sent: Tuesday, 7 September, 2010 4:34:53 Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Where to add transcribed/abstracted wills/monumental inscriptions I haven't seen a reply to this question, perhaps because it's unclear--at least it's unclear to me. Why do you say wills and cemetery transcriptions can't be sourced? Almost *anything* can be sourced. I treat cemetery monuments much the way as you describe. The cemetery name can be the Master Source selected to put on the Source Clipboard. Then in the Text/Comments box you can transcribe the inscription and say whether it's from a photograph, database, if you viewed it personally, etc. Alternatively, you might have a database such as FindAGrave as a Master Source and use that for any ancestors listed there, just changing the Detail Information and Text/Comments on the Source Clipboard for each individual. Once it's on the Clipboard, you only have to click the appropriate fields on the Individual's screen (probably name, dates of birth and death, or whatever) to attach the source data to that field. Wills are slightly more complex. I prefer to use the probate file as the Master Source, then individual documents within the probate file are cited using that Master Source and specific details are transcribed in Detail Information and attached to the relevant individuals and/or fields. A will or Letters of Administration, estate inventory, accounting records or other items in the probate file would each be cited as different items using the same probate file Master Source. Are you perhaps not using the Source Clipboard?
