I prefer also to select "Remove quoted given names" so that your example would read "James Smith married Elizabeth Jones. Lizzie was ..." however I agree with you that the current arrangement is clumsy: it would be much better if it was "James Smith married Elizabeth Jones who was usually called Lizzie.
