Cheryl:

If you currently have part of your data in Legacy I'd recommend importing your
file from the old software into a new and separate file in Legacy rather than
trying to transfer and merge at the same time. After you've gone through and
cleaned up your old file you can do a merge more easily.

Once you've done the initial file transfer, take a look at View > Tree Finder
to make sure all of your branches are properly connected. The next step would
be to review the Surname List (View > Master Lists > Surname) and look for
irregularities there. From that list you can edit as required if you spot
typos. After that I'd tackle the Master Location List. That seems to be the
place where new users find the most errors or duplications and it takes a
little longer to clean up. The Master Source List would come last since it can
take a very long time to get it to your satisfaction. Before digging into
source cleanup, though, I'd run a Potential Problems Report and fix or override
the problems that turn up there. Then run the report again to see where you
stand.

Others may have some additional favorite spots to check for data entry
irregularities and if so, hopefully they'll speak up. Good luck with your
transfer!

Kirsten

Subject: [LegacyUG] Switching Programs - Export and Import

I am switching to Legacy after almost 20 years with another program. My
database has about 12,000 names. Needless to say, I want to make this as
painless as possible.

Are there things I can before I make the transfer to facilitate the import? Are
there things I should or should not do?
