Update: I'm finally getting somewhere. I decided to EXPORT TO a brand new file instead of IMPORT FROM. Then, after merging a few names, I did as Carl said and told the program where to join the files by "link to existing person"

Does this mean I have to manually place the names back on the family tree?>> All the individuals you see in the name list are really in the file, but the program does not know where to join the two files. Presumably there will be some individual common to both files. If so, find the 2 copies of that person and merge them. If no one is common between the two files, then you have to link them. You can have the parents on the family screen, for example, then choose link to an already existing child, or link to a spouse. Once the families are linked, they will appear properly in the pedigree.
