I have done this many times before. First determine the number of people in each file. Look at the size to cover them with a 1 with enough 0s to contain them. For my example say A has 3000 B has 600 C has 1500. We will use A as the final file. when you export B into A, have B's RINs start at 10001, so it will number them B's RIN 1 will become 10001, RIN 2 will be 10002. C should start at 20001. This way while merging, you can tell where this Joe came from and that the two Joe-s do need to merge. After you have combined all the matches, you can choose to take the whole thing and send to a new database, and use 'brand new' numbers or not. Good luck. Does this mean I have to manually place the names back on the family tree?>> All the individuals you see in the name list are really in the file, but the program does not know where to join the two files. Presumably there will be some individual common to both files. If so, find the 2 copies of that person and merge them. If no one is common between the two files, then you have to link them. You can have the parents on the family screen, for example, then choose link to an already existing child, or link to a spouse. Once the families are linked, they will appear properly in the pedigree.
