One option for backup or archival use is DVD-RAM. It looks like a very expensive CD-ROM but behaves like a slow hard drive. The storage technology is much more durable and reliable than CD-ROM, and it's read/write with random access, so you can just leave it in the drive and back up to it or use it as primary storage for multimedia etc. Data doesn't go away if the hardware fails or you get a lightning surge.
