Arnie, I just went through an upgrade to a new computer with Window 7, so can at least give you my experience. First upgrade the Legacy to the latest version on the XP computer. Then download the current version of Legacy to your Windows 7 one and assure that the file is under c:/Legacy. Then copy all of yourdata files from the old computer to the same data file on Win7 and all of your picture files to the picture file under c;/Legacy/pictures.
This should bring up your Legacy file properly. Agree with the comment that if you have the deluxe version, that you will need to put that customer number into the Window 7 version on the new computer to get you back to where you have the full functionality of that application Gene Adams ________________________________ From: Jennifer Crockett <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Sun, November 21, 2010 6:38:31 PM Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] What do I do now Arnie, If you want to use Version 4, you need to go here to download it: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/helpDownloadVersion6.asp If you want to update to a newer version (we are up to Version 7.4), go here for the free Standard Version or the paid Deluxe version: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/DownloadLegacy.asp Regards, Jennifer http://colston-wenck.com -----Original Message----- From: Ron Ferguson [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, 22 November 2010 1:27 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] What do I do now Arnie, You first need to install Legacy, from the Legacy Website, onto your Laptop. Having done so, following Legacy's instructions to install on the C Drive, connect your external drive to your laptop and use File>Restore Family File to get your back-up into Legacy and then Save to the C:\Legacy\Data\ folder. This version has been serving me very well as my family tree is not that complex, yet. But growing. However, I am the only one in my family doing and keeping up with the Family Tree as it evolves. I just love the way Legacy presents the data and the types of reports available. (As opposed to an other program I used) I just bought a new Lap Top with Microsoft 7. I want to keep using Legacy and transfer all my data the new Lap Top. What must I do first , second, third, etc. Do I need to up date my Legacy? Probably. Then what? I do have an external Hard Drive where I back up Legacy. Also, some times, I read that to fix something, users are advised to uninstall Legacy and then reinstall. When the reinstall is done how does all the years of data and pictures get back to the file? As you can guess I am not very computer smart and just had my 80th birthday. If someone can help, please keep it simple for a remarkably simple guy who still can learn.
