I prefer to merge, as I almost always find some things I have better, and
some the other has better. I would suggest that you make a copy of your file
and merge into that one, and when you are satisfied replace the older one
with the updated one. And I have never had problems with merging wrong
people as long as I stay awake. I usually just merge one person, and Legacy
finds almost every other merge required.

Before merging, I suggest that you import the GEDCOM and look over things
like Locations, and anything else that catches your eye, before you merge
the two files.
