Charlotte,

There is no point in renumbering all the RINs, they are just numbers. They are
useful in identifying a specific person and they also provide the file name for
Pedigree webpages. Otherwise they serve little purpose.

Normally the start person, that is the person who created the site has RIN 1
and this number is incremented by 1 as each new person is added. I can see the
point in fillings gaps which are normally created by deleting a person or
merging a (eg.) GEDCOM starting with much higher RINs, but I would be
interested to know what you wish to achieve by a complete renumbering (if it
could be done). Any such alleged system created would be rendered useless as
soon as a new person is added or someone is deleted.

I repeat, a RIN is simply a number.

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] RINs

You've hit the nail right on the head Kathy, thanks for that. Just seems
logical that way. I thought I understood what RINs are but I'm getting confused
by the fields which don't match what I want it to do. I will have a go with
what everyone has suggested and see what happens!

I understand about filling in the 'missing' RINs as you add new people but
I'm wondering if you can renumber the entire database. Like tell it to start
with me as number one and then renumber everything out from there. I don't use
the RINs for much but it seems to me that some people who use them a lot might
want to renumber from the beginning. Just wondering....Kathy

There are missing ones. There's a gap between your smaller numbers and
the larger ones. Take a look at the Name List sorted by RIN - click
on the # field. Then scroll down, looking at the numbers.

The higher numbers will be moved down to fill in the blank spaces.

You probably should also go to Options > Customize > Data Defaults and
make sure "Reuse abandoned RINs" is selected. As you add new
individuals, the "missing" RINs will be filled in.
