Ah, now I see what your point was and it's a very good one.   Microsoft HAS been
very good in the past regarding backward compatibility but the example you give,
Windows Phone 7, is a very good one showing that they not always do that. 
Unfortunately because they did call it Windows Phone "7", it does kind of imply
that it's the next release following Windows Mobile 6.x.   And as we both know,
NO backward compatability.  (They might as well have called it by any other
name, the similarities between Windows Mobile and Windows Phone are very slight)
 
I don't think that's the same with Windows 8.  They are working on a big change
to the user interface for touch control, but under the covers I suspect there's
very little difference between Windows 7 and 8... and it's my understanding that
current applications will work fine.  (including the ability to turn off the new
'multi-touch' Windows 8 interface)
 
And as you mention, really off topic plus total conjecture until it's actually
released.
 
Nothing more I wanted to discuss with you, just kind of came late to the
conversation and missed the point you were making.
