If I understand you correctly, I agree with you that the standard for 
Windows-based programs is normally that clicking X should allow you to get out 
of a changed field without updating.  However, hitting ENTER or the Alt-key 
combination should do an immediate update without having to click on SAVE.  
Legacy is very good that way with numerous shortcuts.  Jerry
