I think you are confusing new.familysearch.org (nFS) with familysearch.org.

The latter is open to the general public and is a hugely valuable
resource.  If you are deliberately ignoring it, you are definitely
cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Quite a lot of the records include images of the originals so you don't
have to step out of your living room to verify them!
