Joan, There are two things that will affect how the names are sorted.
First and most important: To sort in Date of Birth order, turn off the options to include AKAs and Married Names in the list. As Dennis mentioned in one of his replies names are not sorted in birth order when AKAs are turned on. To turn off the AKAs use the option button at the bottom of the search list results screen. There is also one other thing that can make dates appear to be out of order. The lifespan years in the display will use a Chr/Bapt date as the beginning year if no birth date is entered. That chr/bapt year is NOT used for the sort by birth date. If there is no real birth dates entered then those will sort to the top of the list without reference to any Chr/Bapt date that may be entered and which is displayed as the start year of the lifespan.
