I contacted a woman on Ancestry that had included my great grandfather Merret. She even had a copy of his deaf certificate with cause of death. When I contacted her to ask how she was related to him (I had a copy of his Bible record with all the children listed), she responded saying that all the Merrit families in Wayne County, Illinois were related. I responded back - really? Because my great grandfather was illegitimate. (I knew his mother and was lucky enough to have copies of letters written by her.) I never heard from this woman again. And she no longer included my grandfather and his family in her tree.
