Alone this same line, remember that MOST of the information at FamilySearch
does NOT come with sources. You need to double check everything from any source
including published books. This has been a pain is the backside since day one
of Genealogy. I have found just about as many errors in the record sources as I
have in online databases. I have one Great book actually 3 volumes, that the
sure name spelling was changed to a single common spelling. There is at least 5
spellings for this surname. This just made it easier for the author and staff
to type up the book. This was before computers and each page had to be typed.
Now when searching for data on most of the entries, one does not know what the
original spelling is.

We need to quit pointing the finger at the internet databases, as you would NOT
have a lot of the information that you have today without them. YES, be very
leery of the information, and check it out if possible.

Thanks,

Subject: [LegacyUG] UnSourced Internet Trees

Good Afternoon Erin,

I'm certain that anyone on this list is able to recite manysimilar stories of
dealing with Unsourced Internet Trees. It only emphasizes the need for us to
verify the information we receive from any source. I am sure that the woman who
posted the incorrect data did not do it with any ill intention. Otherwise, she
would not have removed it when you made her aware of her error.

I get frustrated when folks refuse to correct mistakes. Particularly, when I do
not even receive an acknowledgment of my email. I have to keep reminding myself
that the person who posted the incorrect information may have passed away or
simply lost interest in this hobby which we all find so fascinating.

I want more folks to post their info on line (documented or not). Then it is my
responsibility to sort through it and decide which I choose to utilize in my
data base.

Have a Great Week.
