I have a different approach to Wendy's, it goes something like this…

If the Census is for an individual not with any family members, I put the
Census Transcript in that person's General Notes.

I then add an Event as either a Residence(if not working) or an Occupation (if
working) together with a general Source for that particular Census (Say "UK
1871 Census") with a comment in the Source detail reading "See notes" [should
probably read "see general notes"].

If the Person is in the Census as part of a Family, I place the Census
Transcript in the Marriage notes of the Parents. I add a Residence /
Occupation to each individual in the family with the appropriate Census source
and a source details reading "see marriage notes" if they are the parents,
"see marriage notes of parents" if they are the children and "see marriage
notes of [brother/sister/son/daughter + name of said]" if they are related but
not part of the immediate family.

Production of reports with notes then clearly shows these details.

The above process I developed when using Family Tree Maker and providing you
use basic sources, transfers through gedcom without any problems.

I try to make my process as independent of genealogy programs as possible.

I use the census event only to show when I have tried to find it but have not
found it e.g. Event: Census: Date [Census Year] : Description [Not Found or
Required]. I use this to produce a list of Censuses Required using the search
process.

Once found, I remove the Census Event entirely, replacing it with either a
Residence or Occupation.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Individual Events vs Marriage Events

I am puzzling on where to put Census (or Residence) Events for a couple.
It is clear that a single person in a Census would have the Census as an
Individual Event. But where you others put a Census Event for a couple?
Individual? Marriage? Both?
