Marli,

I hope this doesn't confuse you even more.

When I have a transcript of a Census which contains a family, I place that
transcripted text in Marriage notes. This way I can see at a glance the way
ages and names change over time and by entering events like residence and
Occupation against the individuals, I can point to the Marriage notes where
applicable.

I still identify the census as the source of the event.

I guess I get confused. Why would you want to put a census in as a marriage
event? (in the marraige part of the screen- the one that shows the marraige
date, status, etc.) I would never know that I had a census entry for a year if
it was there. I don't look for anything except specific marriage information
there (ie- record book from church, or marriage certificate, newspaper
annoucement, etc.). I guess the research notes part of my question should be a
new thread. I will copy & paste it to a new thread. But it is just as
confusing.

Marli:

Are you just talking about individual events and marriage events per the
subject line or have you branched out? If the former, Geoff had a webinar on
Adding A Census Record. I would be glad to send you my notes on the session.

Bruce- (and everyone- I need all the help I can get on this one) when you put
things in the research notes, if you have numerous notes already in there, how
does one find the notes that tell you what you have got or not gotten on that
person? I'm still really shaky on how the whole research notes thing is used.
When I put things into it, I end up with page after page of "disconnected"
information. A paragraph here and another there. I want to source each, but
haven't figured out how to source each one separately. I realize that I have
opened a can of worms, but without them one may not catch the "trophy" fish. I
hope I have worded this so you see what I am trying to ask.

Hi Bruce,

Personally, I like to include a transcription of the census in the Research
Notes where I have a quick reference of the family line. I add this
transcription to the Research notes of each family member listed in the census.
This allows a quick review (all the information in one place) and helps me in
making sure I am on the right path.

I enter the census as an 'event' for each person and include a transcription in
the notes as well. Overkill? Maybe. If they are a direct line relative I also
include an image of the census page in the 'pictures' within the event.

As you can see from all the other replies, there is really no right or wrong,
it's what works best for you. Sometimes, though, we haven't yet figured out
what's best! However, this is coming from one who many would not consider a
'true' genealogist - I collect most anyone that connects to my line. I now have
approximately 23,000 relatives in a single tree of around 340,000 names. I
also work very closely with another researcher on the same tree and we each
enter the data a little differently. Documentation/sourcing is very important
and I don't think you can really overdo it. Thankfully Legacy can handle it!

I am puzzling on where to put Census (or Residence) Events for a couple.
It is clear that a single person in a Census would have the Census as an
Individual Event. But where you others put a Census Event for a couple?
Individual? Marriage? Both?
