Hi Al, "I have also been advised that when starting to use a genealogy package, start entry with oneself. I really don’t understand this advice either. I intend to start with the oldest paternal individual that I know about and all the various family surnames will connect from there."
Starting with yourself is the generally accepted wisdom when starting on your genealogy/family history journey, not when starting with a new program. Here, you're talking about approaching your data entry, not finding out who your family is. If you've been "at it" a while and are just coming to a new program, I don't think it matters where you start with your data entry. The only factor it will influence is the RIN for each person, as it will start at 1 and work upwards incrementally, and that shouldn't be a consideration for you at all. Having said that, I find it very convenient that the RIN for me in my file is 1 - that makes it very quick to navigate back to myself from anywhere within the file when I want to. But there are other ways to do that, too, so it doesn't matter if I'm #1 or not. My partner is #246 - another easy number to remember and not planned at all. They're the only two RINs that I remember in my now very large (15,000+) file, and I'd probably remember our numbers whatever they were, from frequent use, since I'm a quick typist and I like to be able to do things quickly with keyboard shortcuts. Hope this helps. :-) Kind Regards, Wendy Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com).
