Bjorn,

As I am going away today, I do not have time to fully consider the
importance of your post. However, I note that you are using Opera whereas I
use Windows Live Mail as my email client. With this program I have no
problem, and the posts sort perfectly according to the subject, and do not
split the threads.

It may be that Legacy deliberately uses the ID most appropriate for
Microsoft email clients, and if so, since this is likely to be bulk of users
as well as myself, I would not wish to see a change which would be
detrimental to the sorting method which these programs use.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Mailing list problems

I just subscribed tot his mailing list, but am having big problems with it.
The reason for that is because it uses the List-Id header field in a
non-standard way.
This field is supposed to store a static field that should help email
clients to identify and filter mail from lists.
In this list this List-Id field is used as a Message-Id, and it changes for
every mail.
The last one was :
List-Id: listid.LegacyUserGroup.102593264.mail.legacyusers.com
but the next one will have a different number.
Opera, which I'm currently using for email, automatically filters/creates a
new mailing list for every single email from the list because they all have
different List-Id fields.
So far I "have" 13 new mailing lists, all with almost the same name.
I've been subscribing to a lot of lists during 20 years (currently 40 +
those "13" from LegacyusersUG), and none of them behaves like this one. They
all use List-Id in a standard, static way, if at all.
This list also uses the X-mailing-list field (correctly), but that doesn't
help much when the List-Id changes all the time...

I wrote about the issue to the webmaster (listowner?), but have not yet
received a reply.

I was hoping that someone here could help with changing the list setup?

This looks like an interesting group with quite some activity, but it is
impossible to keep on subscribing if it continues to handle the List-Id as a
dynamic field.

Here's a few links about the use of List-Id:
