As a general rule you should keep your data away from your programs. If you only have one partition, it doesn't really matter. However, if you have more than one drive then it is better to keep all your data on one drive, well away from the operating system and programs. That way, if you have to reinstall the OS (or upgrade to a new one) your data are safe.
My layout is C:\ a relatively small SSD for OS, programs and C:\Legacy D:\ 1TB HDD for data, including D:\Genealogy\ which has everything to do with Legacy (except for the programs etc.) in sub folders such as data\, Videos\, Pictures\. E:\ Another 1TB HDD for other stuff Now, I can simply back up EVERYTHING from my data drives onto external 1TB HDD's and can update or reinstall the OS without losing anything important.
