Bjorn,

What negative effect is this having on Millennia's goodwill/reputation? Their
software for the most part is excellent. I don't get my knickers in a knot
over how their list server works, because I don't really care. You really are
the only one that has spent more time complaining about the list server "issue"
than you have asking or responding to legitimate questions on the list. It was
your decision to use Opera for your email. I really do not see a need for
Millennia to start changing how their email is handled in order to accommodate
you.

And many people have given up complaining, because afaik it has been like this
since 2009, with no fix.

@David
There are certain rules/standards for email and mailing lists.
There are several standard header fields in every email, like 'Subject',
'From', 'To' etc.
One of these fields is 'Message-Id', which is supposed to never change in the
lifetime of the email, because it is what uniquely identifies that particular
email.
When someone reply to an email a new field is added to the reply: 'In-Reply-To:
TheOriginalMessage-Id'
This is what makes it possible to show a thread, and without this the best you
can do is to show the mails sorted alphabetically or chronologically.
On this list that Message-Id is changed all the time. When you write an email
to the list your email already have a unique Message-Id, which should not be
changed.
When that email is distributed via the list there is a new Message-Id, hence
when you reply to that mail it will not be possible to know to what message you
replied, because the Message-Ids are not unique. Real threading is not the same
as sorting, which many people seem to believe.

Another standard header field is List-Id, which should uniquely identify the
mail as belonging to a certain mailing list.
Like Message-Id it should never change. All mail sent to/from the list should
use the same List-Id value.
Unfortunately every single mail sent from this lists listserver have a new
List-Id-value.
At the same time there is a non-standard list identifier header field called
X-mailing-list, which is used correctly on this list - ie it is a unique value.
But unfortunately this doesn't help much when some email clients expect mailing
lists to follow the standards, like Opera mail does.
Every single mail gets sorted into a new mailing list, with one single mail
there, because the same List-Id will never be used again.
And all those "lists" have to be deleted one by one.

I've been off this list for a while, waiting for the announced upgrade, to see
if it would help.
It didn't make any difference at all :(

What makes this so frustrating is that there are many free listservers
available around, which makes it difficult to understand why Millennia keeps on
using this malfunctioning listserver year after year, even when they know that
it causes a lot of problems.
And that they don't understand the negative effect this has on their
goodwill/reputation.
I can understand that some bugs can be hard to track down, and that some
suggestions are not followed-up. But there really is no excuse for letting this
list run for several years with well known 'bugs', when there are many good,
and even free, alternatives that would fix the problems immediately.
Many lists that I'm subscribing to have moved to yahoogroups or Googlegroups,
which both works very well.
And there are virtually no spam on them, as some people seems to believe.
