I tried the MRIN filing system and found that I had too many empty folders
taking up valuable filing space, waiting for me to fill them. It wasn't long
before I changed.

I do something very similar to Jenny except that I use file boxes instead of
binders. Each document is in an archival sheet protector with a label of my
special code placed in the upper right. This code is then added to the Source
Citation as the File ID.

My digital copies are named with the File ID and stored in folders under
D:\Genealogy\Documents, such as Census, Birth Records, Newspaper Articles,
Obituaries, etc.

All the inconsistencies you point out are the very reason why I don't use the
MRIN filing system. There are so many reasons for a person not being married
or not connected to their parents' marriage/partnership that it just seems a
nonsense to me.

I keep all my paper records in binders according to the nature of the document
- eg correspondence, press, certificates, web pages. Within the binders each
sheet (or set of pages) has a reference which is recorded in the appropriate
field in the Source Citation. Within each document each mention of the name of
an individual in my family file is annotated in the margin with the UserID
(which happens to be my family
code+RIN.)

I don't need to keep multiple copies of any document, I don't need ever to move
documents from one binder to another and I can easily and swiftly track a
document from Source Citation to binder or from binder to individual in Legacy.
