Sally, I almost gasped but found myself chuckling.  I can see where you're
coming from on that.  However, I tend to research by family, working with a unit
to find siblings, parents, etc. and move backward through my line.  I like to
have all the relevant documents together.  Also, I use binders instead of
folders.  And I use 6 colors instead of 4... possibly someone is gasping at
that.  In fact, my daughter and I were considering moving to 8 colors, because I
have gathered enough on her daddy's father's line to go to 2 binders... of
course, she would like the new color to be pink!

Do you keep all your census images together?  How are they sorted?  Or do you
not print them out?  Thx.

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] MRIN filing

I put ALL birth certs, newspaper birth announcements, etc. in one huge
folder.  Likewise with death certs, marriages, etc.  I know some of  you will
gasp...just like my genealogy buddy does.  LOL
But I know  EXACTLY where to look instantly.  Everything is named in
alphabetical order  and then date order.  I consider it as if it were a
repository
at a  library.  Legacy does the work of pulling the files from the
repository.

Why make life difficult trying to decide where a file goes when Legacy does
it for you?

I've  started storing scanned or downloaded images etc. in folders named
MRIN His  name and Her name.  I get a lot of folders, but it seems
consistent  with the recommendation for paper filing given by Legacy.

For those who  use a similar system, either electronic or paper-based,
how do you handle  people who don't have marriages?

I've been putting children's birth  information in their parent's folder
and then creating a folder for the  child when they marry.  If a child
leaves home and appears on the  census, for example, still unmarried and
not with their parents, I put that  data in the parent's folder, with a
name which suggests the child.  E.g.  "1881 Census (M0123).jpg" for the
main family's census image, but  "1881 Census - Mary Ann (I02345).jpg"
for the child's individual  entry.

My problem is what to do when the child marries.  Should I  move the
child's information into the new MRIN folder, even though a lot of  the
info doesn't relate to that marriage?  Should I have Individual  folders
"RIN Individual Name" for stuff specific to that child?  That  wuld mean
a huge number of folders.

What about second marriages, or  what about a previous marriage being
discovered?

There must be an  obvious, recommended way to handle this.

Any advice would be  appreciated.

thanks

Tony
