Just to clarify... I was having trouble because the family view of the 2nd marriage had no natural children, so there was no child to right-click on. I went to the other marriage to right-click on a child's name and was able to turn it on. Sorry to have started all this confusion.
However, once I link the two children to their step-father and set their relationship-to-father to "Step" --- the "1/2" goes away.
