When I have a long entry with the last end having more than one variation, I highlight the differing part at the end with the mouse and start typing what I want. Autocomplete takes up from there.
If I was a fast typist it would probably be faster to just keep typing, but the way I do it ensures that my typing is correct. I can see no down side to autocomplete. If you don't want it, you just keep typing and ignore auto complete. It does not force any acceptance. If you like what it presents, you just stop typing and it is done. A win-win situation as I see it.
