David, I do not consider it particularly important whether others may understand the file naming system. My objective was to simply ensure that *all* my file names were unique, so that when I moved to fresh computers it would be easy to get them correctly linked. NB. I do not have my files stored in C:\.... but in the areas designated for the PC users.

When one is no longer around to answer any question, about where did "he/she" put those files? As for using surname for folders, I have way to many that would be in more than one folder. As for the married females, are they in their main name of married name? what about if they have been married more than once? This is why I use the surname as part of the file and in most cases I the maiden name upfront and a married name last. I also will use birth and death years if needed and a type of data, such as Birth Cert, Death Cert and etc. Thanks, David C Abernathy Email disclaimers ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- This message represents the official view of the voices in my head. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.SchmeckAbernathy.com == All outgoing and incoming mail is scanned by F-Prot Antivirus == -----Original Message----- From: Ron Ferguson [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, June 08, 2012 2:46 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Photo Naming Tip JLB, Actually my 2012 is the year, and if I need more than one folder then I may have 2012-1. But, as you correctly say, in use it is just a number which helps to make a file name unique. I could just as easily have used RINS or MRINs in the file name.
