I know of several instances where the named father had died a few years before the birth of the child. No proof was ever required when registration of a birth, death or marriage took place! By asking discreetly around the wider family, sometimes it is possible to get an idea of who the biological father was, once you have a surname, take a look at what the various DNA services have to offer.
