It sounds like you've got your colours set so that the field names change to the same as the background colour when there is a source assigned. Changing it should fix the problem, if that's the case.
Options > Customise > Colours > Click here to change user interface colours I don't recall exactly which field you need to change - it's either "Contents" or "Contents Background" - both of mine are set to red right now. Click on the button for the field you want to change, select the colour you want to use. Close/save your changes.
