It is possible to take a picture on the iPhone and then add it into the Families database.
I only use a PC (Win7) and don't have a Mac or iPad. It doesn't really seamlessly 'sync'. You have to move the file back onto your PC. You can then use the'Merge' feature if you want to combine databases.
