I use the "Alt" events too. As well as being able to assign the right source to the facts it provided, it also records the date you added it, so you can see how the research progressed.
Each time I find data that isn't exactly as I've already recorded it, I use an Alt event. It might be that a source gives me only a date (or a partial date), or only a location, and keeping these separate keeps it clear what information is supplied by each source. I have edited my Alt events to read along these lines: [HeShe] has alternative birth information of [Desc], [Date] and [Place].[Sources] [Notes] (Note this may be an earlier discovery rather than a conflict; check sources & attribution date.)
