Pat, Computers are stupid, they cannot think, nor do they have the ability to guess. All they can do is *exactly* what one tells them to do. So, if you link a child to its father, then that is all it will do. If you then add a mother it will even do that, but unless, one way or another, you tell it that the father and mother are the specific ones which you intend them to be it won't know, so you will have an un-named father and an un-named mother as appropriate.
