The MJM were found in a publication of Land Between the Rivers Historical Society, Portage des Sioux, MO.  In the Tombstone Inscription section, several of the stones have the letters MJM  listed as part of the "other information on stone" data.  Also included in the "other information" are the names of spouses or children which would indicate to me that the grave site was used for more than one person.  The stone dates are in the 1800's.  I have also found several other online Cemetery sites databases that use the MJM letters.  The cemetery sites that I have found have all been in Missouri - I don't if the letters is unique to the area or not. My first impression would be it’s a roman numeral, but there is no “J” in standard roman numerals. Could the “J” actually be a fancy “I” - If an “I”, then the date would be 1999. Alternatively, if small and located inconspicuously it could be a mark of the tombstone maker.
