Brian and others have brought up a most important subject.

Place namesmay change over time.
I do a lot of research in Canada, and in particular in the province of
Ontario; all current names.
However Canada, and the province of Ontario, did not exist until July 1
1867.
The province of Ontario is made up of Counties, Townships, and in some
cases Territories.
Just to confuse things further, the boundaries of the counties, and
townships have changes and in some cases, the names also.

Now, here is a Web site that may benefit some who are trying to come up
with the official name of a
current place. This Web site lists places from the the most detailed,
then up to the country.

The Web site is Called: *Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names**
*
The Web address is:

http://www.getty.edu/research/tools/vocabularies/tgn/index.html

It will take some time to study this Web page , but the results will, I
believe, be useful.

I hope the above is of interest.
