As you probably know you would want to first convert your rtf to Word
format using' File / Save as .doc' in Word to convert.  Alvy Ray Smith
also published Word macros to accompany the article.    If you can
find them, they might be more useful than styles. I assume you have
his tutorial:

It looks a bit daunting, but nice output; good luck with it.
