Yes, it's possible. Or so I am assured by power-users of Word and WP. I suspect a college-level class might reveal their secrets, but I've no interest in paying that much for the knowledge.
Look at Alvy Ray's document -- might help. Based on my experiences, it will make an incredible difference to your work if you create a TO_PRINT database containing ONLY what you want included in the final output. It won't solve the footnote problem (and if you find something that DOES, please share), but it will cut down the amount of deleting you need to do. And, for new footnotes, cheat: include them in the text. Makes your life easier and ensures everyone reads 'em. The other approach involves doing copy'n'paste from the Legacy/whatever output into a newly created document.
